Finding a motorcycle seat that’s comfortable from mile 1 to 1,000 might sound impossible. This can be more challenging if you need a shorter or taller motorcycle seat. Discomfort is a clear sign your current seat isn’t right for you. If you know what to look for, shopping for a more comfortable motorcycle seat for your height is easy. From materials to posture and height, find out how to choose the right seat for your next ride.
What to Look for in a Comfortable Motorcycle Seat
Find a firm Super Cell Atomic Foam motorcycle seat - When we think of a comfortable seat, we usually think of a soft foam or gel. The issue with a soft seat is balance and support. When a seat is too soft, your core, thighs, and lower back strain to keep you balanced as you ride.
You need a firm foam seat to provide proper support. This is especially true if you’re looking at a seat with modified height because the foam thickness will differ from a standard seat. Our proprietary Super Cell Atomic Foam creates the ideal blend of firmness and spring-suspension performance. We also include a special layer of memory foam to absorb your body’s shape and relieve pressure points.
Look for a balanced seat - Most motorcycle seats have a high point in the middle, causing pressure points.
Each Sargent seat is designed to be the lower in the center with a more level riding platform. This keeps you from sliding forward in the seat while allowing you to adjust your positioning freely. This is key for every rider, but it’s especially true if balance is a challenge on your current bike because of your height.
Choose the right design - If your current seat is narrow in the back and bulky at the nose, you likely have a hard time finding a comfortable position on long rides. This throws off the gate of your hips, which adds to the already increased pressure short and tall riders experience on their back and hips.
Sargent seats are designed with added width in the back and a cupped shape for more lateral support. We also keep the nose of the seat as narrow as possible to allow for easy adjustment while you ride. This makes it easier to adapt to road conditions and riding preferences.
How to Tell if Your Motorcycle Seat Fits You
When it comes to seat fit, it can be challenging to know what to look for. Now that you know how to find a comfortable seat, make sure you choose the right seat height.
Here’s a quick seat fit checklist you can use to make sure you have the right seat height.
-Your feet touch the ground comfortably when stopped.
-Your knees are bent to about 90 degrees with your feet on the pegs.
-You can transition smoothly from seated to standing.
-Your back and hips are aligned comfortably.
-You can balance comfortably on one or both feet when stopped.
-You can reach the handlebars easily.
-You can mount and dismount from your bike smoothly.
When to Choose a Short Motorcycle Seat
If you find yourself on your tiptoes at stop signs, shifting from right to left at red lights, or sliding off your bike to dismount, you might need a lower motorcycle seat.
Look for seats with the label “Low Version." Sargent Low Version seats have about an inch taken out of the base to allow for shorter reach. These seats have slightly less foam, so they may feel firmer than a standard height seat. These versions still have our memory foam inserts, pressure relief channels, and proprietary Super Cell Atomic Foam blend to provide support and suspension for maximum comfort.
When to Choose a Tall Motorcycle Seat
If your legs feel cramped on your bike, you may need a tall version seat. Your knees are likely bent past your toes. This puts pressure on your joints and leads to an uncomfortable ride. Touring means unexpected terrain, and a bike that’s too short makes those transitions tiring.
Riders over 6 feet tall may prefer a Sargent tall version seat to add extra height. Sargent Tall Version seats add 1-1.5 inches of Super Cell Atomic Foam to the base, giving you an extra lift and taking pressure off your knees, hips, and back.
