If you’re planning to take some time off over the holidays, why not take a motorcycle road trip? There’s something extra adventurous about embarking on an overnight getaway on your motorcycle. We all know the importance of ensuring our bikes are properly serviced and safe before starting a longer trip. However, there are some additional details that often get ignored and in doing so can put a damper on your fun. Here are some reminders to consider in advance of your next overnighter.

Comfort First

Depending on how much time you have in advance, it’s a great idea to strengthen the muscles most used when riding your motorcycle before a long trip. Focus on building up your biceps, shoulders, chest, thighs and back strength with weights or resistance training. (It may sound like overkill, but you’ll find that it’s worth it.) Investing in a high-performance seat is also important for enjoying long trips. The team at Sargent Cycle Products frequently hears how much better our customers have done after installing a premium seat. Though there are mixed feelings among motorcycle riders about backrests, many people benefit from this added feature and there are numerous options available. Highway pegs and adjustable foot pegs may be used for better leg comfort and can be placed to better accommodate your leg position. Also, take some time to carefully adjust your handlebars before hitting the highway.

Hot, Cold & Wet

As much as we prepare, we also know we can’t control mother nature. As the saying goes, you’re going to end up hot, cold and wet on any motorcycle trip. When considering your clothing and gear, protection should be thought of as its primary function. Make sure helmets, protective jackets, gloves, and boots are at the top of the list for your motorcycle trip. Fortunately, motorcycle jacket technology has advanced significantly in recent years, serving multiple functions. Newer mesh motorcycle jackets feature improved slide and abrasion resistance for safety, while also providing much-needed ventilation. Riders can stay cool in warmer temperatures or use removable liners for warmth and wind proofing in cooler temperatures. Textile and adventure motorcycle jackets are also good options for navigating various temperatures and climates. While leather jackets are always in style and offer abrasion protection, they are not as versatile and may not be the best choice for a longer road trip.

Let's Get Packing

Packing a motorcycle is an art. There are hundreds of products on the market to help you pack efficiently. Here are just a few tips to keep in mind for ease and comfort. Even if you think you have the best, most comfortable motorcycle backpack, keep it light. (While we are on the topic, only use backpacks that have been specially designed for motorcycle riders. Resist the temptation to just use a regular backpack you already have on hand.) If you’re using a storage bag, pack the heaviest items closest to where the bag is mounted. Use multiple smaller bags rather than one big one. This allows you to pack in categories and avoid sifting through a giant bag to try and find necessary items in a hurry. Also, make sure the items you might need during your rest stop are at the top of your bag or in a side pocket.

Putting It All Together

Safety is the number one priority when planning a motorcycle trip, but there are a few things you can do to make it more comfortable and enjoyable. Focus on your body and accessories like performance seats, handlebars and adjustable foot pegs to sit comfortably on your bike. Check out the latest in gear to weather the elements and pack in a way that helps you find needed items with ease. Most of all, enjoy the ride.
